The Mentor Whos Already Closer Than You Think

The Mentor Whos Already Closer Than You ThinkThe Mentor Whos Already Closer Than You ThinkA professional mentor is someone whose advice you can trust and depend on who will lift you up, yet be honest with you when push comes to shove. A good mentor sees you through the best of times and the not-so-great and is often one of your biggest cheerleaders. If youre thinking that this sounds a lot like the role of a close friend, youre actually not too far off. A mentor can, in many ways, take on the role of a professional BFF- and who ever said a friend couldnt make a great career mentor? After all, your friends are there to celebrate when youve achieved a major milestone, to sympathize when youre going through a rough patch, and to give advice when youre struggling with a difficult decision. So its only natural that theyd be there for you in a professional sense as well. This is where the concept of a friendtor comes in. Its the idea that one of the best people you can have in your social a rsenal is an honest, trustworthy friend who can double as a professional mentor- someone you can turn to not only for fun times and memories, but also for advice and support in your career. Having friends who are as committed to career growth as you are can help you be better at your job and happier in your personal life. Heres why. They Get YouMost mentors only know you in a professional sense, even if they do have some knowledge of your personal life. Friends, however, have the luxury of context They may have known you for many years, know your family and social group, and have seen you confront previous challenges. This depth of familiarity can be key when it comes to giving you honest, helpful, trustworthy advice. For example, while a professional mentor may urge you to take a lucrative job in another city without a second thought, a close friend would know more about your priorities and values. Maybe youre extremely close with your sister who lives nearby and want to stay put no matter the price tag. A friendtor can acknowledge the difficulty a move would pose, and can help you work through the pros and cons of making a huge life change. (Related Is your mentor giving you bad advice?)They Widen Your CircleIf you work at a tech startup and your friendtor is an accountant at a big firm, youve hit the networking jackpot and expanded your connections threefold. While it can be great to talk to someone in your field (where mentors usually come from), the reality is that the wider your circle, the more likely you are to make diverse connections that can open your eyes to new contacts, business opportunities, and career paths.Friendtors are ForeverIf your friendtor happens to be one of your lifelong friends, he or she will be there as your life changes and priorities shift. Say, for instance, you get married and have a child. Your friend can help you adjust to your new role as a parent, while helping you find ways to keep your professional skills strong while you re on leave- or maybe even babysit when you need to stay late at work. Keep in mind, however, that not every friend is made for a friendtor role. Have you ever been out with a group of friends when the topic of work comes up? Perhaps youre asking for advice about how to cope with a difficult boss. Theres bound to be that one friend who says, Seriously? Why do you care so much? mora drinks please Maybe you share a love for Crossfit and music festivals, but the truth is, youre just not on the same wavelength when it comes to professional growth. And thats fine- just dont expect to count on this person to understand when you have to skip happy hour to finish a big project or to give you advice when youre passed over for a promotion.Friendtors, on the other hand, are the people who will spend hours listening to a story about a big misunderstanding with your boss and why its bothering you. And vice versa, friendtors will come to you when theyve set up a big interview and need help role-p laying tricky questions. Friendtors can be your biggest career cheerleaders because they have the benefit of context about who you are (aside from a driven professional, of course). They can give advice tailored to you and your values, theyre accessible, and, best of all, they can double as your Saturday night partner in crime. Friendtors are so essential because, like an awesome blazer, they can seamlessly transition from work to play. So before you start looking for a new job or wondering where to go for career advice, evaluate the people in your life to identify friendtors, and start there.Photo of people talking courtesy of Shutterstock.

How to Fill out a W-4 Form for a New Job

How to Fill out a W-4 Form for a New JobHow to Fill out a W-4 Form for a New JobIf you have landed your first job or are starting a new job you will need to fill out a W-4 form so that your employer can determine how much tax to withhold from your paycheck.ThePersonal Allowances Worksheet accompanying your W-4 form will be a valuable tool to help you determine the number of allowances you should note on the actual form. The Purpose of a W-4 Form The W-4 Form is completed by an employee so the employer can withhold the correct amount of federal income tax from your pay. When you are hired for a new job, you will be required to complete a W-4 Form to let your employer know how much tax to withhold. Prior to starting employment, you can fill out a PDF version of the W-4 formzugreifbarand print it out.Its also a good idea to review withholding amounts on a regular basis to ensure the appropriate amount of tax is withheld. The W-4 form indicates to employers how much they need to dedu ct from your wages for federal income tax. This amount can be altered significantly depending on the number of withholding allowances a person decides to claim. The more claims that are taken, the less money will be taken out of your paycheck for federal taxes. These allowances can be changed at any time on account of additional jobs, marriage, pregnancy or adoption, divorce, etc. W-4 Allowances Allowances will be increased if you claim yourself, aspouse or children as dependents. Paying childcare expenses may also add to your number of allowances as will non-wage income like dividends or interest. If you itemize deductions on your taxes, you will want to complete the Deductions and Adjustments Worksheet to see if the level of your deductions indicates that you could decrease the amount that you withhold.TheIRS withholding calculatorwalks you through the process of evaluating your situation to determine appropriate levels of withholding. Before you begin filling out the W-4, it is worth sitting down with your spouse to determine whether or not you will be filing a joint tax return together for the current year. If so, review the first part of the W-4 carefully, as this section will determine how many personal allowances you will claim as a couple. It is best practice to determine the number of allowances in advance so that when you each fill out W-4 forms with your employers, you will only list the half the total allowances (your portion of the join return) when asked. Once the proper number of allowances and any additional amount of withholding is determined through the use of these tools, the process of completing your W-4 is quite straightforward. Boxes 1-4 contain your personal data, box 5 is where you enter the number of allowances, box 6 is the place to put any additional amount you would like withheld and box 7 is only for the rare person who doesnt need to withhold due to a very limited tax liability. Changing Your Deductions Even if you havent just landed a new job, you can file a new W-4 with your employer if your life situation and/or deductions have changed or if you have found that you have too high a tax bill when you file or too large a refund. A critical ingredient in the process will be your philosophy regarding paying taxes, whether you would prefer to pay as you go throughout the year via withholding or at the end of the year. Some wage earners prefer to withhold more to lessen any tax surprises at the end of the year and in effect, force some savings if they are owed a refund. Others want to maximize their weekly/monthly paychecks and therefore increase their allowances and the amount withheld. After submitting your W-4 (through new employment or updated with new allowances), the information will go into effect quite fast. Employers are required to update employee information within 30 days of submitting the form, in time for that next pay period. If you forget to submit your W-4 in time for the end of the yea r, the IRS will treat consider your income like that of a single person without any withholding allowances. Depending on your situation, this could be problematic, so be sure to submit the form as soon as possible while it is still fresh on your mind. Do This Instead of Comparing Yourself to Others - The Muse

Do This Instead of Comparing Yourself to Others - The Muse Do This Instead of Comparing Yourself to Others We compare ourselves to others all the time- she’s so much cooler than I am; he always knows how to impress our boss; she’s definitely going to get promoted before I do. And we also all know how bad it is to do this. It doesn’t lead to any self-improvement, and it makes us feel worse about ourselves because we can’t live up to all the people around us. Long story short: This kind of internal dialogue isn’t productive. Now, I can’t stop you from having these thoughts- it’s natural to see our colleagues’ success and wish the same for ourselves. But, I can help you turn those insecurities into healthy, proactive actions. The next time you start feeling jealous about others’ accomplishments, here’s how to give yourself a confidence boost. 1. List Your Accomplishments Sure, your co-worker ran an Ironman or your friend landed an awesome new gig. But what about you? I bet you haven’t just been sitting around waiting to get “lucky.” Whenever you’re feeling down about what everyone else is up to, stop the self-deprecation and take responsibility for your own achievements by writing them down. It can be anything, and it can be short-term or long-term. Just start listing the things you’re proudest of this day, week, year, lifetime. By putting them down on paper, you’re making them real, tangible, noteworthy- and you can’t retract them just because someone else did something bigger. Next, take a good, hard look at that list. Notice how long it is and how far you’ve come and give yourself a pat on the back. Then, notice what’s missing from it, which leads me to my next point. 2. Set Goals The beneficial thing about comparing yourself to others is that you can use it to push yourself to be better as well. You can’t become someone else, but you can learn from his or her success and adopt some of these same habits or behaviors. So, take note of what strikes you about someone else, and then think of how you can get there, too. If this person is always prepared in meetings and seemingly able to offer great ideas on the fly, set aside 30 minutes on the day of the meeting to get yourself organized, read through any relevant emails or documents, and start brainstorming on the topic. If he or she is well-liked in the office, make it a goal to get coffee with one new person every day this week so you too can get to know more people (and show them how awesome you are). Of course, nobody got to where he or she is in a day, which is why it’s important to set realistic expectations for yourself and your abilities. You can look up to your CEO for all the work she’s done, but obviously don’t make your goal “become a CEO by the end of the year.” Instead, evaluate the steps you’d have to take to maybe make that a reality- taking initiative at work, getting involved in speaking engagements, starting a side gig, and so on. More importantly, be aware of the traits you admire, but simply don’t align with who you are. These are the things you have to just let go. For example, I look up to people who wake up to run every day, but I know that’ll simply never be me (I get more done at night). 3. Ask Questions Finally, remember that even the coolest, smartest, wittiest, most successful people you wish you were like are also, well, people. And odds are good that they’d be flattered to help you get to their level. So, don’t be afraid to compliment them, ask questions, and get a bit of insight into what makes them so awesome. Reach out to your hero on LinkedIn with a personalized message and see if he would be willing to discuss his career experience. Or, ask a colleague if she could give you feedback on your presentation, because she’s always such a good public speaker. Or, grab lunch with a friend and learn about how he landed his new job. (Was spending more time with friends on your list of goals? Boom, two birds with one stone). It’s normal to see your own flaws in other people’s strengths. The thing is, you shouldn’t just feel bad about yourself- you have the power, and the tools, to become that admirable person. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, take these three steps to harness all that hidden potential you didn’t know you had. And for all you know, maybe all the stuff you have going for you is making someone else jealous as we speak. Photo of woman listening courtesy of Thomas Barwick/Getty Images.

The way you email might be turning your coworkers against you

The way you email might be turning your coworkers against you The way you email might be turning your coworkers against you Let’s get one thing out of the way first: Email is a terrible means of communication. Slack and its ilk included, there’s still no good digital duplicate to the basic social niceties that grease most of our interactions and make sure we all get along well enough. No amount or combination of exclamation points or emojis can replace a warm smile or a pleasant tone of voice. So while it certainly makes sense to  practice writing shorter,  more emotionally intelligent emails, there’s a limit to what you’ll ever be able to accomplish between hitting “new message” and “send.” The real reason your emails are getting on your coworkers’ nerves has nothing to do with what, how, or when you write â€" it’s all a matter of human psychology. Here’s why and what to do about it. Related:  What Happened When I Replied “Call Me” To Every Email I Got For A Week Back to basics Inevitably â€" and often without even realizing it â€" your colleagues have to fill in a lot of details when they read any email from you. They’re making guesses about your intent and tone: Did you mean that particular statement seriously or ironically? Does that sarcasm reflect frustration or lighthearted humor?  And that request you’re making â€" do you realize the burden it places on others? To answer many of these implicit questions, a sender will fill in the gaps with what they know (or don’t know) about you personally. Which means that if your email bothers its recipient, there’s a good chance it isn’t the email itself that’s the problem, but  you. An identical email coming from someone else might be received and interpreted much differently. The solution is simple: As soon as interpersonal guesswork gets in the way of your message, it’s time to inject some interpersonal substance in its place. Engage with your colleagues directly (i.e.  not  digitally) when you get the sense they’re feeling annoyed by your emails (or to prevent that from happening in the first place). Pick up the phone when there’s something you need or when you have to respond to a series of queries rather than just get one simple thing squared away. Set up a quick chat in person to give feedback on a report. Offer to grab a cup of coffee to go over it together. Related:  Six Ways To Write Emails That Don’t Make People Silently Resent You What you gain by avoiding email (as much as possible) You might object that you don’t have time for all this real-time contact. But  what email was designed to do in the first place  is to make it easier for busy people to communicate. But even most  short  conversations actually take longer over email. You have to switch over to your inbox, skim the prior message to remember where you left off, and repeat this process several times each as the thread continues. With real conversation, you can often reach the same outcome in about the time it would take you just to read and respond to a single email in the chain. (That’s exactly what fellow  Fast Company  contributor Allen Gannett found  when he tried replying “call me”  to all the emails he received for a week straight.) On top of that, when you actually talk to someone, you have a chance to gauge their reaction to what you’re saying in real time. You can convey your warmth and respect for your coworkers much more easily in person than in written textâ€"whether it’s email, Slack, Google Hangouts, or what have you. Related:  A Short Guide To Work Phone Calls For People Who Grew Up Texting There are other reasons why analog interactions are usually better than dashing off replies like, “Thanks so much! :} You’re the best Carlos!!” For one thing, when you talk to Carlos in person, his facial expression and tone of voice can give you a sense of whether he sees your request as asking too much, and this way you’ll know how and whether to acknowledge the magnitude of the favor. Second, it’s easier to express appreciation in person. Saying “thanks” in the same email as your request makes it sound like your gratitude is really just another part of the ask. And if you hold off to say thanks in a follow-up email solely for that purpose, then, as short as it is, you’re wasting their time. So don’t just save complicated stuff for phone calls and in-person meetings. Try handling a few of your smaller requests in person as well. You’ll build better, stronger relationships at work in the process. And by sending fewer emails altogether, you’ll be less likely to annoy the people receiving them. The 15-minute morning routine Anthony Trollope used to write 1 book each year for 39 years

The 15-minute morning routine Anthony Trollope used to write 1 book each year for 39 years The 15-minute morning routine Anthony Trollope used to write 1 book each year for 39 years Over the course of his 39-year writing career- from 1843 to 1882- Anthony Trollope wrote 47 novels, 17 non-fiction books, 2 plays, and over 20 articles and letters, that made him famous.  1As a further testament to his incredible work ethic, Trollope juggled his writing whilst holding down a full-time job with the Civil Service in the General Post Office, for the first 20 years after his first publication. But Trollope’s superhuman-like productivity didn’t happen by chance.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!In his  Autobiography- and as noted in  Daily Rituals: How Artists Work(audiobook)  - Trollope explains how he created a morning routine of writing in 15-minute intervals, which helped him to produce over ten pages a day:“It was my practice to be at my table every morning at 5.30 A.M.; and it was also my practice to allow myself no mercy….It had at this time become m y custom,- and is still my custom, though of late I have become a little lenient of myself,- to write with my watch before me, and to require of myself 250 words every quarter of an hour….This division of time allowed me to produce over ten pages of an ordinary novel volume a day, and if kept up through ten months, would have given as its results three novels of three volumes each in the year.”  2This daily routine was the engine that helped Trollope write approximately one book each year over the span of 39 years.Let’s uncover the hidden secrets within Trollope’s morning routine that will help you be more productive in life and work. The Hidden Productivity Secrets of Anthony Trollope’s RoutineLike most authors, Trollope had writing deadlines set by book publishers. But unlike most authors, Trollope didn’t wait till the last minute to deliver his finished manuscript. In fact, he often finished them well in advance. Here are three key takeaways from Trollope’s daily routi ne to improve your productivity.1. Pay someone to keep you accountableIn Trollope’s autobiography, he describes paying an assistant to wake him up at 5:30 am every morning:“An old groom, whose business it was to call me, and to whom I paid £5 a year extra for the duty, allowed himself no mercy. During all those years at Waltham Cross he never was once late with the coffee which it was his duty to bring me.”This is an example of what psychologists refer to as a “commitment device.”  3A commitment device is a choice you make in the present that controls your actions in the future. For example, if you’re trying to lose weight, you could buy small plates to avoid overeating.By  designing your environment  with commitment devices, you can make it easier to stick to good habits and break bad ones.2. Track your progressAnother powerful strategy Trollope noted in his autobiography, was keeping track of the number of pages he wrote each day:“When I have commenced a new book, I have always prepared a diary, divided into weeks, and carried on for the period which I have allowed myself for the completion of the work.In this I have entered, day by day, the number of pages I have written, so that  if at any time I have slipped into idleness for a day or two, the record of that idleness has been there staring me in the face, and demanding of me increased labour…”This is another example of a commitment device used by Anthony Trollope to keep himself accountable to writing over ten pages each day.Specifically, the last few sentences written by Trollope above, reveal a simple, yet overlooked productivity secret: when you see your daily progress- or lack of it- you’re more likely to stick to your goals over the long run.As an example, for several years I struggled to stay consistent with my reading habit- reading an average of 20 books each year.Over the past 6 months, I’ve experimented with tracking the number of pages I read each day and sharing my  month ly reading list  to the public. The results have been astonishing. So far this year, I’ve read 26 books- a reading rate of approximately 5 books per month. This ties well with a growing body of research which has discovered that tracking and measuring your progress significantly improves the odds of following through on your plans.  43. Focus on the system, not the goalGoals are useful for pointing you in the right direction, but not sufficient in showing you  how  to get there. When we focus obsessively on our goals, it’s easy to become overwhelmed, discouraged by lack of progress, and  fail to finish what we start.Trollope’s work around this problem was to breakdown his goal of publishing books into daily writing quotas. In other words, he focused on the “system” of writing pages daily, not the ultimate goal of writing a book. The same logic applies to other types of goals. For example, if you want to build a successful business, one of your systems could be sending 5 pitch ema ils to potential clients each day.Within a month, you’d have sent 150 emails, and in one year, over 1,500 emails- significantly improving your odds of success. When in doubt, ask yourself this question:What do I need to do each day to make achieving my goals inevitable?Small Habits, Big Results“A small daily task, if it be really daily, will beat the labours of a spasmodic Hercules. It is the tortoise which always catches the hare.” - Anthony TrollopeCome rain or shine, Anthony Trollope would wake up early in the morning each day to read and write his novels. His incredible output of 47 books is a testament to the power of these small habits repeated on a daily basis: although you may not see the effects today, small habits compound overtime to create big results. When we let the schedule drive our behavior, we stop waiting for inspiration like amateurs do, and become professionals who show up and get things done.Because the only difference between successful people and everyone else, is that they  do what others hate to do, but do it like they love it.Mayo Oshin writes at MayoOshin.Com, where he shares the best practical ideas based on proven science and the habits of highly successful people for stress-free productivity and improved mental performance. 5 Common Mistakes to Avoid When Hiring Employees

5 Common Mistakes to Avoid When Hiring Employees 5 Common Mistakes to Avoid When Hiring Employees If you’re a manager who recently got the green light to hire a new employee, we’ve got good and bad news for you. The good news, of course, is that you can bring in extra hands to help relieve your existing team. The bad news: Chances are that a lot of other hiring managers at competing companies are also trying to bring on additional team members. Businesses continue hiring employees at a brisk pace. And as firms battle for top talent in today’s candidate-short market, it’s critical you become a hunter, not a gatherer. Here’s what we mean … Hunters take a proactive and multifaceted approach to hiring employees by using an array of tools and channels to identify and attract the best candidates. Those resources include cutting-edge technology, as well as internal referrals, specialized recruiters, social media, carefully cultivated professional networks and more. Gatherers, on the other hand, rely on one tool at the exclusion of all others. They simply post a job online and then sit back and wait (and hope) to receive decent resumes. The “if I post a job, the right candidates will apply” approach may have worked in the past, when employers had the edge. But we’re now operating in a vastly different hiring market; candidates are often the ones in the driver’s seat. Relying entirely on a job posting is unlikely to result in a stack of resumes, let alone a stack of resumes from people with the right skills and experience for the role. As you shape your employment strategy to stay competitive, here are five common, costly and time-consuming hiring process mistakes - and tips to help you avoid them: Mistake #1: Assuming the perfect candidate will respond to a job posting Job boards and other posting sites reach only one segment of the market: people actively looking for work. Many professionals with hot skill sets in areas such as cybersecurity, front-end web development or compliance are already employed. They’re not searching for new career opportunities. That said, these people are often open to pursuing greener pastures if presented with the right opportunity. Reaching these specialized workers requires a specialized approach. Thanks to their deep networks within the local business community, well-connected recruiters frequently know who the passive job seekers are and what types of opportunities would appeal to them. Mistake #2: Focusing too heavily on the resume The applicant with the best resume is often the best resume writer - or someone who is good at matching keywords in their resume to those in the job description. By contrast, the strongest job candidates possess the ideal blend of technical and soft skills, fit with the corporate culture, and are motivated to move their career forward. None of these important traits can be determined by scanning resumes. Personal interaction is required early on in the hiring process to determine which candidates are truly promising and which simply know how to present themselves well on paper. Mistake #3: Thinking technology is all you need There’s no question that over-reliance on technology can slow down the hiring process. Employers may use technical tools to post ads, but it’s not unusual for it to take weeks or even months for these ads to bear fruit. Then there’s the time it takes to sort through and review the resumes received. Smart recruiting involves both art and science; it’s high-tech and high-touch. Posting jobs online or using data analytics to better understand trends about your target candidate pool is smart. But so is using staffing experts, who can leverage their extensive networks and industry knowledge to quickly find professionals who will truly excel in the role.   HIRING? WE CAN HELP!   Mistake #4: Recruiting only when you have a job opening Wise employers are in recruiting mode day in and day out. They create a healthy pipeline of candidates through active networking. They also strategically use specialized recruiters to find top-notch candidates and keep pace of market and salary trends. Savvy employers also make recruiting the business of everyone in the company by offering referral incentives. If you’re already doing that, take a step back and gauge the effectiveness of the program. You may need to make the incentives more appealing to encourage everyone to practice “always-on” recruiting. This type of preparation and approach will help you fill vacancies quickly with minimal negative impact on the business. Mistake #5: Underestimating the costs of a hiring mistake Some employers seem to have the attitude that, “If I make a mistake, I’ll just hire someone else.” If only it were that easy. Hiring mistakes can be quite costly. The consequences include a decline in team morale, a Robert Half study shows, and the time spent coaching underperforming employees can take up a quarter of your workweek, CFOs said. When hiring employees for critical roles, connect with a specialized recruiter in your area who can help you find the right fit. The best recruiters also minimize your risk by offering a service guarantee if the new hire doesn’t stick for some reason. Finally, when you do identify great people to interview, take special care of them and keep things moving. Make the effort to develop a rapport and stay in close touch throughout the process. Long timelines or lack of information can frustrate job candidates and cause them to question your company’s interest in them and ability to make business-critical decisions. Hiring employees is easy. But bringing aboard the right employees requires much more finesse. The key to success today is taking a comprehensive approach to recruiting and then communicating clearly with your finalists. Learn how staffing and recruitment agencies can help you save time and money during the hiring process now!

Single women are now outpacing single men in this category Single women are now outpacing single men in this category You go girl. In addition to women earning more college and doctoral degrees than men, single women are now outpacing men when it comes to buying homes.  LendingTree, an online loan marketplace, found that on average single women own 22% of homes while men come in at less than 13%. This means single women own, on average, more than 70,000 more homes than men do. How Successful People Network Well - The Muse

How Successful People Network Well - The Muse How Successful People Network Well Confession time: The first time I met Adrian Granzella Larssen, Editor-in-Chief of The Daily Muse, I called her the wrong name- twice. Adrian very gracefully ignored the first mistake, corrected the second, and somehow, two months later, offered me a job at the company. But that mistake has haunted me, and since then I’ve spent a lot of time brushing up on how to be a better networker. (And working on my ability to remember names- here are a few tips on that.) If you’re like me and could use some networking inspiration from the pros, check out how these four leaders make connections. 1. Keith Ferrazzi Ferrazzi is the CEO of Ferrazzi Greenlight and the author of two popular networking books: Never Eat Alone: And Other Secrets to Success, One Relationship at a Time and Who’s Got Your Back. Way back in 2003, he told Inc. one of his secrets to success: Never stop keeping track of your “dream connections.” “I'm constantly ripping out lists in magazines. I was one of Crain’s ‘40 under 40’ when I was 30. Interestingly enough, I had been ripping out 40-under-40 lists for years and continue to do so. Those are individuals who somebody has spent enough time to identify as an up-and-comer, a mover, an intellectual, and these are the kinds of people I want to surround myself with. I rip out lists of top CEOs, most admired CEOs, regional lists. A recent book by Richard Saul Wurman lists the 1,000 most creative people in the United States. It’s fantastic.” Ferrazzi’s strategy is super easy to implement. Next time you go to a conference, write down the names of the keynote speakers. When you’re reading industry news, write down the names of the people being quoted or discussed. Keep track of the companies winning awards in your area or professional space- and who runs them. Wondering how to use those names? Check out our advice on scoring an informational interview or getting influencers to notice you on social media. 2. Reid Hoffman Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, is arguably one of the best networkers of the online era. In a Fortune article, he reveals that his networking philosophy is all about helping other people- the right way. “To be truly helpful…you need to have a sense of your friend’s values and priorities. What keeps him up at 2 AM? What are his talents? His challenges? Once you understand his needs, think about offering him a small gift. A small gift is something that’s easy for you to give, unique to the relationship, and unusually helpful for the other person. Classic small gifts include relevant information, introductions, and advice. A really expensive big gift is actually counterproductive- it can feel like a bribe. When deciding what to give, reflect on your unique experiences and capabilities. What might you have that the other person does not?” Once you start looking for opportunities to do small favors for your connections, they’re incredibly easy to find. Right this very second, I want you to choose a professional. Any professional will do- your boss, your intern, your former co-worker, someone you met at a networking event last year- you get the drift. Now, think of another person the first person could benefit from knowing, because they have mutual interests, the ability to help one other, or compatible personalities. After you’ve chosen your two people, send an email to each asking if you could introduce the two of them (and yes, this double-opt-in intro is important). Once they say yes? Intro them. And congrats: You just created value, Hoffman-style. 3. Jon Levy Before this week, I’d never heard of Jon Levy- but apparently that says more about me than it does about him. As Business Insider explains, “Levy may not be a Wall Street billionaire or hotshot advertising executive, but over the past five years, he’s built the Influencers, a network of over 400 interesting and impressive people that includes everyone from Nobel laureates to Olympic athletes.” Every two weeks, Levy holds Salons: exclusive “TED talk-like” dinner parties for important people from every facet of life. How does Levy meet and connect with these people? He makes himself mysterious. “When people ask me what I do, I try to be a little elusive just to create some interest. So I tell people I spend most of my life trying to convince people to cook me dinner. Which is true… a lot of my time is really spent around logistics, phone calls, and emails and all that. But the benefit of [my introduction] is that it sounds so different and then it’s much easier to connect.” While we don’t recommend making yourself mysterious when your career’s just getting started, we do recommend stealing his introduction strategy. To break yourself out the boring, rote introductions Levy says most of us use, think of an interesting way to describe your current role. For example, if you’re a data software engineer for Radius, rather than answering, “What do you do?” as “I’m a data software engineer for Radius,” say, “I’m changing the way businesses think about their customers.” The natural reaction to the first is a “meh”- the natural reaction to the second is “How?” 4. Ivan Misner Misner knows a lot about networking- so much so that he wrote a book, Networking for Pros, and started BNI, a professional business networking organization. Before he meets anyone with whom he’d like to develop a relationship, he does a lot of research. What’s Misner looking for? Something the professional is “truly interested in.” That could be a charity, a hobby, a side project, even a sports team. Misner tells Fast Company he used this technique to score a meeting with Richard Branson, the CEO of Virgin Mobile. Misner knew Branson had just launched a nonprofit, so he said, “I understand you’re doing something called the B-Team. Tell me about it.” “He lit up. I asked him how I could be of help with the project, and suggested interviewing him for my blog.” Next time you’re trying to reach out to someone, figure out what he or she is passionate about, and then show some interest. And you don’t have to wait to meet professionals in person; find an article related to what they care about and send it to them on Twitter or in an email. You’ll stand out from the hordes of other networkers just looking for what they can get out the relationship. What are your favorite networking tips? Have you ever messed up the name of someone really important? Tell me on Twitter!.

Survey Americans ideas of success go beyond income

Survey Americans' ideas of success go beyond income Survey Americans' ideas of success go beyond income When do we know we’ve made it? For some of us, it’s when our bank accounts are more comfortable or when we finally land that dream job we’ve always wanted. Although dreams of what “making it” is shifts from person to person, a new poll has found shared commonalities of what American success means, wanting to earn more, so that we gain the freedom to work less.Survey: Success means making more money and working lessIn its poll of 2,000 people, a ThermoSoft survey found that the average Americans’ ideal vision of being successful is when they are married with two children, and earning $147,000 from their stay-at-home job that only makes them work up to 31 hours a week and rewards them with five weeks of vacation. Although only 31 percent of respondents worked from home, more than half of them said they wanted to be working remotely in their successful futures. The average respondent’s commute took 17 minutes and they wanted it to be shaved down to ten minutes to consider themselves as more successful. In general, respondents recognized that money was key to getting control of their careers and personal life to be successful. When they were asked what was the “epitome of ‘making it’ financially,” the top answer respondents gave was never having to worry about medical bills.  Being wealthy was the top goal listed for respondents when asked what attaining an “above average” status would look like, outranking other markers of status like personal autonomy, the respect of one’s peers, responsibility, and fame. But there was a limit to the financial success respondents wanted. Seventy-seven percent of respondents said they would not want more than $1 million in income even if it was offered.Women’s vision of success is more tied to income than menThe definition of success changed with the respondents’ gender. Women were more likely to have a more pragmatic approach to success. When asked what they most wanted to be above average in, women were more likely than men to choose wealth, while men were more likely to prioritize freedom. Men were more likely to answer that not having their dream job was the biggest missing factor in the vision of “making it” while women were more likely to answer that income was missing.
